First of all, it’s important to remember that Pescara is not just a seaside resort where nothing happens after the summer season. It is primarily a lively medium-sized city that has an economic influence on the entire Abruzzo region. It is also a university city – home to a university with four faculties, the largest tourist and industrial port in the region, and an international airport. That’s why some of the best restaurants and certain hotels are open year-round, not just seasonally.
Pescara also has other advantages:
- Affordable restaurants and pizzerias; many inexpensive supermarkets not aimed at tourists;
- All essential tourist spots are relatively close to each other;
- The beaches are ideal for families with small children;
The city has a large train station – regional trains costing just a few euros can take you on day trips to other coastal towns in Abruzzo, Marche, or Molise. In Molise, it’s worth visiting Termoli (50 minutes by train).
The Pescara River flows through the city center, emptying into the Adriatic Sea here. It divides the city into two roughly equal parts, connected by the Sea Bridge built in 2009.
Pescara’s Beaches
A wide sandy beach is Pescara’s greatest asset. It’s not an impressive beach with bays and cliffs; however, it is well-maintained, clean, and equipped. The fine, golden, soft sand typical of the Adriatic coast features not only simple umbrellas but also exclusive palm trees of various sizes.
Warm summer colors like yellow and wood tones dominate, creating a sense of well-being and natural relaxation for visitors.
The free zones are clearly separated and relatively numerous. There are definitely more free beaches here than in popular Rimini, where sometimes you have to walk 2 km to reach a free beach.
